The History of Food Sharing and Etiquette

A smart article on the history of potluck food sharing and etiquette in the New York Times:
'Store Bought' Spoils the Potluck Spirit. We like the's author's thoughts on the meaning of putting yourself into whatever it is you bring. Of course, we'd rather have your company at a potluck than have you skip it because the day's plans have made "store bought" the only option.  And frankly, we're happy for you to show up with a hand full of napkins!

November Potluck postponed until December 18th!

Hello Potluckers!

We must reschedule this weekend's previously scheduled potluck. Apologies for the late notice.

We are re-scheduling the Italian themed potluck for Dec 18th. Hopefully the Italian theme will provide a nice break for the taste buds between the November and December holiday food!

Have a wonderful weekend!

BBQ, Barrett, and Bon Voyage

The October Potluck was a cocktail of BBQ themed food, music from local singer Abbie Barrett, and a fond farewell party for our frequent and beloved potlucker, Doug.

Thanks Abbie for giving us a mini concert!!!

You can find out more about Abbie and her band on her website.  They have a new CD coming out in mid November and will be playing at the Lizard Lounge 11/19/11!

Bon Voyage, dear Douglas!

If you'd like to share your recipes from the October Potluck, send them to us!  Past recipes can be found on the recipe page.  Enjoy.

No Thanks. But pretty darn funny!

Anybody for a tour of this food museum:  Arlington's Burnt Food Museum?  For a few laughs and possibly some cringes, take a look at their online gallery of charred meals for more pictures.  Please don't worry, we are not inspired to host a "burnt" food themed potluck!

Outrageously enjoyable! That's a potluck for ya.

The 2nd picnic potluck was unbeatable.  "It was just what I needed, not to mention the awesomeness of the food," said Doug.  We stayed dry and cool, despite a predicted storm and we chillaxed for several hours enjoying good company and amazing food.

I can't adequately describe the Pumpkin Hummus made by Krista.  Or her Vegan Carrot Cupcakes.  Or her Grilled Corn Salad...her food was the star of the picnic.

Even more decadent food was shared:  watermelon, feta, and mint salad, fish tacos, home grown tomatoes...

To top it all off, we got to eat cake too!  Celebrating Sasha's birthday with a Cinnamon Apple Cake added to an already plentiful dessert course.

And then there were Somerville's own Kick*ss Cupcakes!

Several of the recipes for the food from this potluck can be found on the recipe page.  Enjoy.

Rusty Hamlin, you're invited to the Somerville Potluck.

"A Roadie With A Whisk," an article from the New York Times "Dining and Wine" section, is about preconcert "eat and greets" hosted by the Zac Brown Band for their fans.  They were inspired to host them as a way to remove the awkwardness of traditional fan + band meet and greets.  Their chef, Rusty Hamlin, buys local ingredients from each city in which the band is playing and cooks up impressively unique, original, and apparently delicious meals for fans.

I'd like to invite Rusty Hamlin to our potlucks:

Picnic Potluck August 21st!

We had such a nice, outdoorsy, and delicious time at the picnic potluck in July that we've decided a 2nd picnic was a good idea for August.  This Sunday, August 21 we'll meet on the Esplanade, near the hatch shell, for a potluck with a "local" theme.  Call either Sasha or I once you're in the area if you can't spot us immediately.  Click on the Next Potluck page for more info.

Hoping for sunshine and to see many of you there!

Perfect Potluck Picnic!

We lucked out with the picnic.   The temps cooled just as folks were arriving and we found a grande spot in the shade, right near the flag pole on the Battle Green in Lexington.

Holy cow, what an incredible feast we had!  These picts will make you hungry.

Some food, so fresh, was picked the morning of from a backyard garden!  These veggies belong on a magazine cover...

The evening was so pleasant that we all happily lounged with well fed stomachs and wine til about 9:30.   This was so enjoyable, I think another picnic potluck needs to happen before the summer is out.

Feel free to send in any other theme ideas for August or any other month!

Just Our Style

Check out this article in the NY Times featuring a pop-up dinner that has taken place since 1988! It's right up our Potluck alley!  Not only do the participants in this grande dinner bring food, they bring their own tables and dinnerware too.  NY is having its own version on August 25th for the first time.

I love this shared dinner idea!  When shall we have one in Boston?

Picnic Potluck Moved to July...

The June picnic potluck was postponed due to the soggy weather.  But don't toss your picnic recipes,  we'll reschedule for mid July.  Stay tuned for a new date!

Instead of the picnic, a we met up at the Foundry on Elm, in Davis Square.  The drinks and dishes were delicious!

January Potluck photos

The inaugural Potluck was January 30, 2011 with a winter-warming Soup theme.

Hearty soups, better than we could have anticipated, were brought one after the other to share with all the potluckers.  Proof that the idea for potlucking amongst friends, new and old, was going to be a hit!
